Katherine Burke: On A Whim

3Thurs Reception: Thursday, May 18, 6- 7 PM

On view: May 2 – August 24, 2017

The Lounge Gallery at the Lyndon House Arts Center, features quarterly solo exhibitions by emerging artists. Artists in the beginning stages of their careers exhibit wall-bound works in mediums alternating from drawing to painting to photography to printmaking.
Katherine Burke is the recent recipient of the 2017 Art Center Choice Award from the 42nd Juried Exhibition. This award includes a solo exhibition opportunity in the Lounge Gallery.
Katherine Burke creates abstract spaces in response to childhood memories. Her collages piece-together images from her childhood, combining expressive drawings and found scraps of paper material to create delightfully layered and experimental compositions. She not only plays with mixed materials but also explores imagination, memory and nostalgia. Burke says, "The subjects in these paintings are resourced from old film photographs taken by my mother: candid, authentic snapshots of human interaction with the child and the childlike. The emphasis in these paintings has little to do with the personal connection between myself and the family member featured in the photographs—but more to do with my fascination with  childlike behavior, the recollection of childhood, and the adult response to the child”.
Burke studied Fabric Design with a minor in Flute Performance at the University of Georgia. She currently works at Two Story Coffee in Five Points and recently finished an internship with the UGA Wesley Foundation.
