Legal Notices

Legal notices are typically run in the Friday edition of the Athens-Banner Herald.

Mayor & Commission
Legal notices for zoning actions voted upon by the Mayor and Commission of the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County are run at least 15 days but not more than 45 days prior to the public hearing date. These zoning actions include rezones, planned developments, special use permits, zoning ordinance text amendments, and amendments to or adoption of comprehensive plan components. Public hearings to vote on the designation of a local district or landmark must be advertised at least 10 but not more than 20 days prior to the hearing.

Hearings Board
Legal notices for variance applications voted upon by the Hearings Board are run at least 15 days but not more than 45 days prior to the public hearing date.

Historic Preservation Commission
Public hearings to decide upon applications for Certificates of Appropriateness for the demolition or relocation of locally designated landmarks and of contributing structures within a locally designated historic district must be advertised at least 10 but not more than 20 days prior to the hearing. Public hearings to recommend the designation of a local district or landmark must also be advertised at least 10 but not more than 20 days prior to the hearing.

Planning Commission
Most voting actions of the Planning Commission are advisory in nature and do not have a binding legal result such as a change in zoning. These advisory votes are therefore not advertised in the local newspaper. However, appeals of Hearings Board decisions are heard by the Planning Commission and these decisions are advertised at least 15 but not more than 45 days prior to the public hearing.

Preliminary Plat Staff Conferences
A legal advertisement is run approximately 1.5 weeks prior to the conference, the purpose of which is to discuss technical issues related to the review of subdivisions of five or more lots.
