Christmas Wreath Fire Prevention 2018 15 Fires

During December, the Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services Department encouraged the community’s support to help eliminate structure fires during the holiday season and “Keep the Wreath Green.” For every preventable structure fire experienced from December 1-31, a green bulb on the above wreath was changed from green to red.

In 2018, we experienced 17 structure fires during the month of December: Eleven in single family dwellings and six in multi-family dwellings. Nine of those structure fires started in the kitchen, two started on a porch/deck, one in a garage, two in a Family Room/Den, one in a bedroom and two the room of origin was undetermined.

In 2019, we experienced 15 structure fires during the month of December. Thanks for helping us drop the number which we hope to do again this year during the December holiday season.
