Overview

  • A meeting with our Sign and Marking Engineer should be scheduled, by calling (706) 613-3460, at least 1 month prior to installation of any M.U.T.C.D. signage and markings for approval
  • Inspections of new sign and markings installations will be conducted within 1 week after installation. Inspection will verify compliance with MUTCD requirements.

Traffic Engineering Signals Section Requirements

  • If the TIA indicates a signal installation is warranted the developers should immediately schedule a meeting with the ACC Signal Engineer at (706) 613-3460. Additionally, the study shall be emailed to trafficengineering@accgov.com
  • The developer will be required to provide funding for the entire cost of the signal installation.
  • The Mayor and Board of Commissioners must approve any signal installation for ACCGOV roadways or State Routes. ACC Traffic Engineering will initiate the Mayor and Commission Agenda process. If the signal is on a GDOT roadway, GDOT permission must be obtained before the ACC agenda process is initiated. ACC Traffic Engineering typically requires 3 weeks for signal review, the ACC Mayor and Commission process is on average a 3 to 4 months process, and GDOT review time varies. The overall process is an 8-12 month process of average.
  • Plans must be submitted in GDOT traffic signal format to Traffic Engineering- email. All signal plans must be stamped by PE.
  • Signal design formats are located in the MUTCD, Chapter 4, and GDOT’s Traffic Signal Installation and Design Guide.
  • Any traffic signal plan revisions must be sent to trafficengineering@accgov.com for approval prior to construction. No fees are required for submitting plan revision and it is typically a 2-week review.
  • Any signal installation must be inspected 10 business days prior to the signal being activated. A message    board notifying the public of the signal activation date is required to be placed at all approaches to the intersection for 7 days prior and 7 days post signal activation
