Call for Car Entries!

The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department announces that car entry applications are now being accepted for the inaugural Sandy Creek BBQ, Blues, & Cruise-In.  This event is scheduled for Sunday, October 13 from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Sandy Creek Park.

Interested classic, art, and unique car enthusiasts are encouraged to apply for entry to the car cruise-in.   
The online entry application is now available. The car show entry application is $15 per vehicle.  The deadline for entries is Monday, October 7 at noon.  Late applications are not accepted.

Entries will complete for unique trophies in a variety of categories including “Best in Show,” “Best Interior,” “Most Unique,” and others.

Fleetwood Mac

On Stage at the Morton

Next up at the Morton Theatre ... America’s #1 Fleetwood Mac Tribute Band!
The Fleetwood Mac Experience will recreate the legendary look and sound of the one and only Fleetwood Mac. The evening will feature all of their beloved hits like Don't Stop, Dreams, Go Your Own Way, Landslide, Rhiannon, and many more!

This special performance is scheduled for Thursday, August 22 at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets may be purchased online.

Splash Pad

"Night Hike" at 

Sandy Creek Nature Center

Discover local trails by moonlight!
Come along on a guided Night Hike at Sandy Creek Nature Center. Enjoy activities that enhance the beauty and magic of the forest at night. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Attendees must bring a water bottle and wear shoes for hiking.

This special night hike, for ages eight and older, is scheduled for Friday, August 23 from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m.  The fee is $2 for ACC residents and $3 for non-residents.

Splash Pad

Walker Park Splash Pad 

Open Weekends Only

Cool off on the weekends at the the Walker Park Splash Pad, located at 200 Trail Creek St.
The splash pad remains open weekends only, through September 2.  Hours of operation are 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.  Admission is $1 per person.

Dial-a-Poem is back!
Call 762-400-POEM (or 762-400-7636) to hear selections from the new Athens-Clarke County Poet Laureate, Mikhayla Robinson Smith, featuring music by Ben Williams.
Selections from inaugural Poet Laureate, Jeff Fallis, are available as well.
Water Festival

Athens Water Festival at Sandy Creek Park

One of the best family-friendly events in Athens is right around the corner.
Don't miss the annual Athens Water Festival on Saturday, September 7 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Sandy Creek Park. The festival is free, however there is the $2 per person park entry fee.
This year's theme is Legos. We’re shining a light on the most important building block of life, WATER! Block by block masterpieces are built with Legos, just like drop by drop water shapes every aspect of the Classic City.
Bring a bathing suit to run through the spray of the water trucks and swim in Lake Chapman. Be wowed by a magic show and make Lego art with the art truck. There will be more than twenty interactive games, displays, and activities fun for the whole family.

Fall Program Online Registration Continues

The Leisure Services Department continues fall program online registration. 
The selection features a diverse group of activities including:
  • Art
  • Dance
  • Day off School Programs
  • Gymnastics
  • Nature
  • Soccer
  • Teen Programs
  • Tennis
  • Theatre

    All registration takes place online at www.accgov.com/myrec  Registration will continue until activities are at full enrollment or they begin.

    Before registering, individuals who have not already done so, must establish a free online account at www.accgov.com/myrec. Payment may be rendered using a debit card, American Express, Discover Card, MasterCard, Visa, or a MasterCard or Visa gift card.

    Individuals with expired scholarships and new scholarship applicants must visit a Leisure Services Department facility office at least five business days prior to registering for a program. Scholarships must be applied for in person. Information regarding the scholarship activity, including required documentation, is available at www.accgov.com/scholarship.

The Leisure Services Department has begun the process of developing a new comprehensive master plan! A huge part of the process is knowing what the community values and discovering where we need to focus our efforts in the future.

Trail Guide

Trail Guiding at 

Sandy Creek Nature Center

Do you love being outdoors?  Then become a Trail Guide at Sandy Creek Nature Center.
These volunteers lead small groups of children on hikes around the nature center trails and emphasize the lesson for the day by incorporating things found on the hike when they attend a field trip.  Training provided!

The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department offers scholarship to qualifying Athens-Clarke County children. 

Scholarships allow participants to pay less than the program fee.
