Watch: Reading of "In Our City"

During a special presentation at the beginning of the Mayor and Commission's April 16 Agenda Setting Session, the newest Athens Poet Laureate read her poem "In Our City." You can watch the meeting video on the ACCGov YouTube channel or on Roku through the ACCGov channel.

Athens-Clarke County (ACCGov) introduced the Poet Laureate program in 2020 with support from the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission (ACAC). The Poet Laureate program is administered by the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Arts Division.

ACCGov Charity Drive raises $65,000+ in 2023

ACCGov's Charity Drive program allows employees to donate a portion of each paycheck to local nonprofit organizations and foundations. In 2023, $65,845 was collected for 32 organizations, including the Athens Area Homeless Shelter, Clarke County Mentor Program, Nuçi's Space, and other organizations. 

In addition to local charities, employees also have the option to contribute to an Employee Emergency Assistance Fund, which offers financial assistance to ACCGov employees and retirees in the event of an emergency. Last year, 51 employees benefitted from $51,200 in assistance.

2024 Green Life Awards is Wed., April 24

The 2024 Green Life Awards recognizing sustainability leaders in the community will be held on Wednesday, April 24 beginning at 6:00 PM in the Conservatory at the State Botanical Garden with a reception to follow.

In addition, K-12 student artwork is also on display at the Lyndon House Arts Center through Thursday, April 25 with a closing ceremony beginning at 4:00 PM on April 25. This year's theme is “Climate Champions: The Climate is Changing, How Can We?”

Register to vote by April 22 for the May 21 General Primary / Nonpartisan Election

The voter registration deadline for the May 21, 2024 General Primary/Nonpartisan Election is Monday, April 22, 2024.

Note that due to the deadline date, the Elections Office will be open on April 22, although other ACCGov offices will be closed for the Earth Day holiday (see below).

Use the Georgia Secretary of State's My Voter Page online at www.mvp.sos.ga.gov to:

  • Verify voting status
  • Change name/address
  • Register to vote

Two new boat launches increase river access

Spring is here and it’s the perfect time to experience one of Leisure Services-operated kayak/canoe launches. 

Two new launches are open to the public along the North Oconee River Greenway: one at Dudley Park and another at the trailhead on College Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. Boat launches are also located at Sandy Creek Park and Ben Burton Park.

Multicultural Festival on April 27 at Heard Park

Join the ACCGov Inclusion Office an other organizations for a Multicultural Festival on April 27 from 10:00 AM until 6:00 PM at Heard Park (400 McKinley Drive). Admission is free.

The celebration of diverse cultures will take place both inside and outside the community center with multicultural vendors and live performances. Come delve into a rich array of engaging activities, educational offerings and resources, and performances representing cultures worldwide.

49th Juried Show on exhibit through May 4

Make plans to check out the 49th Juried Exhibition at the Lyndon House Arts Center between now and May 4. This year’s juror was Jen Sudul Edwards, Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art at The Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. She reviewed 722 works of art by 265 Athens area artists, and of those, chose 160 works by 111 artists. 

The Lyndon House will host its final artist talk in the gallery on Thursday, April 25 beginning at 6:00 PM. Visit the accgov.com/lyndonhouse for details.

ACCGov services and facilities schedule changes for Earth Day holiday

Changes for April 22 Earth Day Holiday

ACCGov departments and offices will have schedule and service changes due to the observed ACCGov Earth Day holiday on Monday, April 22.

General administrative ACCGov government buildings will have closures on Monday, April 22, while Animal Services, Leisure Services, and Solid Waste will have changes to their schedules.

The Elections Department will be open as normal due to the April 22 voter registration deadline for the May 21 election (see above) and Transit will operate as normal.
