Holiday Hours

The New Year’s Day holiday will be observed on Sunday, January 1 and Monday, January 2.
All park grounds will operate under reduced hours of 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Sandy Creek Park is closed on Monday. All facilities are closed.
Regular hours of operation for all parks and facilities will resume Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

First Day Hike

Kick off 2023 with Trails and Open Space!
Join us for a First Day Hike at Sandy Creek Park. on Sunday, January 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Burn off those extra holiday calories on this seven-mile hike on Lakeside Trail.
Wear sturdy shoes and layer-up for this adventure. Bring water and a snack to have on the trail.

Juried Art Show

It Could be a Masterpiece!

The Lyndon House Arts Center announces the online call for artwork submissions for the 48th Juried Exhibition.  The show will be selected by Juror, Maria Elena Ortiz, Curator at The Modern, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Submissions for the 48th Juried Exhibition will be received only online at ArtCall.org. The call for art submissions will be live from January 4 at 10:00 a.m. – January 20 at 5:00 p.m.  Opportunity to enter artworks for the exhibition will end on January 20 at 5:00 p.m. 

Athens area visual artists, 18 years and older, are welcome to submit up to 3 entries for consideration. An entry fee of $35.00 is required. Athens area includes the following counties: Banks, Barrow, Clarke, Elbert, Franklin, Greene, Hall, Hart, Jackson, Madison, Morgan, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Walton, and Wilkes Counties.

Notification of all artist entries is January 27, 2023 at noon. Artworks selected for the exhibition need to be delivered to the Lyndon House Arts Center on Thursday February 2, 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m., Friday February 3 and Saturday February 4 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The 48th Juried Exhibition opens in the galleries on March 2, 2023. The exhibition will be on view through May 6, 2023.

All exhibitions are free of charge and open to the public.  Exhibitions are on view during regular gallery hours, Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bring one for the chipper

Tree-cyling!

Keep Athens-Clarke County Beautiful would like to remind you to “Bring One for the Chipper!"  Join us at this year’s Christmas Tree-cycling event on Saturday, January 7 from 9:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. 

Give your tree a second life as compost, mulch, or fish habitat by bringing your undecorated tree to one of the seven drop-off locations and receive a free tree seedling in return.
Christmas tree recycling will also be available before and after the 7th at selected locations or by setting your tree out with your regularly scheduled leaf and limb pick up.

MLK Day of Service

MLK Day of Service

Athenians are invited to honor Dr. King's legacy at the annual Athens-Clarke County Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 16, 2023.

In 1994, Congress made the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday an official day of service. Athens-Clarke County is one of the thousands of cities across the United States that decides to make the holiday "A Day On and Not a Day Off.”

This year’s kick-off celebration will take place from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. at the Clarke Central High School gymnasium located at 350 South Milledge Avenue. The first 400 registered volunteers at the kick-off will receive free t-shirts, and light morning refreshments will be served.

More than 25 different community organizations, schools, and churches will host volunteer service projects for the Day of Service, including the Athens Area Homeless Shelter, Acceptance Recovery Center, Brooklyn Cemetery, Nuci’s Space, Family Promise Athens, Project Safe, and more.

Online volunteer registration will tentatively open on Monday, January 2 and close on Friday, January 13. Those interested in participating can find the registration link online at www.accgov.com/mlkday. Limited walk-up registration will be available at the kick-off event.

Fantastic Friday at Bishop Park

Finally!  Parents have been waiting for the return of this much beloved “Fantastic Friday” program that allows parents and kids to hang out and have fun in a non-structured environment.  Parents are required to stay for the program and are responsible for leading their children through various obstacle courses and fun.

This program is for ages 12 months to 4 years at the Bishop Park Gym and takes place 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning January 13.  Pre-registration is required.

The fee is $7.50 per person for ACC residents and $9.00 per person for non-county residents.

The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department offers scholarship to qualifying Athens-Clarke County children. 

Scholarships allow participants to pay less than the program fee.
