Shadow Puppet

Shadow Puppet Play

The Leisure Services Department is pleased to host Lupita’s Revenge, a 45-minute shadow-puppet play created and performed by an alliance of musicians and visual artists from Athens on November 18 at 7:00 p.m.  This is a free outdoor event to take place on the North Lawn at the Lyndon House Arts Center.

Written and Directed by Abel Klainbaum with Lead Visual Artist, Phil Jasen, Lupita’s Revenge is a lively play featuring love, vengeance, and a long journey, all of which is accompanied by a live soundtrack of Latin American classics performed by some of Athens favorite musical talents. Included are Megan Cole on vocals, Keiko Ishibashi on violin, Elijah Neesmith on bass, Jeremy Raj on guitar, and Abel Klainbaum on accordion.  Joining Phil Jasen behind the stage are puppeteers Laura Maria Ramirez and SJ Ursrey.

Lupita’s Revenge is performed with a traveling Cranky Theater, which is a moving panoramic paper that is unrolled as the story and scenes unfold. Lit from behind, the characters are cut out paper silhouettes held on sticks.  The story of Lupita’s Revenge starts in Mexico City in 1929 and ends in Valdosta, Georgia, twenty years later with Lupita’s conquest and a victorious conclusion.

This all ages event is free and outside. Reservations are required.

Warm clothes and blankets are recommended.  Please note there are some adult themes such as vengeance and fighting, but all are artistically portrayed in silhouette.

Parade

2021 Downtown Parade of Lights

The annual Athens-Clarke County Downtown Parade of Lights is scheduled for Thursday, December 2 starting at 7:00 p.m.

This year’s theme is “A Super Hero Holiday.” Performing units will be judged during the parade itself.  Entries will compete for such prizes as “Most Original Float,” “Best Use of Theme,” and “Best Use of Lights.”  The best overall float will receive the “Mayor’s Award.”

The parade will have two grand marshals.  Local nurses Laura Breckenridge representing Piedmont Athens Regional and Luke Duncan from St. Mary’s Healthcare System were selected by their respective employers to honor the local health care community who have been super heroes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The parade begins on the corner of Hancock Avenue and Pulaski Street and includes the traditional tree lighting ceremony in front of City Hall hosted by none other than Santa.  Due to construction on Clayton Street, the parade will have an adjusted route this year.  The updated parade route map is available at www.accgov.com/parade

The Athens-Clarke County Downtown Parade of Lights is sponsored by the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government and the Athens Downtown Development Authority.
