Trail Improvements at Southeast Clarke Park - Tell Us What You Think!

The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department will host public input sessions regarding the trail improvements proposed for Southeast Clarke Park.

These sessions are planned for Saturday, August 28 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., and Monday, August 30 from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Both sessions will take place outdoors at the Athens-Clarke County Tennis Center located at 4460 Lexington Road. Additionally, an online survey will be available at www.accgov.com/leisureserviceslistens.

With Mayor and Commission approval, Leisure Services will apply for the State of Georgia’s Division of Natural Resources’ Recreational Trails Program grant that will require matching from SPLOST 2020 Park Improvements Project. Staff plans to pursue grants from other agencies to further supplement project funding, as well.

Movies by Moonlight

Time to go to the movies, again!

The Department will host a free “Movies by Moonlight” drive in movie on Friday, September 10 at Sandy Creek Park. Tickets will be available online on Wednesday, September 1. There is no rain date.

It’s time to kick off football season in the heart of the Bulldog Nation with the gridiron classic “Remember the Titans.” Tickets will be available online at www.accgov.com/myrec from Wednesday, September 1 at 9:00 a.m. until Wednesday, September 8 at midnight or while supplies last. Tickets will not be available on the night of the event.

Check in will begin at 7:30 p.m. Attendees will not be allowed into the movie area after 8:15 p.m. to ensure a safe and positive movie experience for all movie goers. The film will start at 8:30 p.m. Park gates will be closed and late entry is not permitted as not to disturb the movie experience.

Upon arrival, patrons will be directed to the movie viewing area. The public should bring their own refreshments. Food and beverages will not be sold or provided at the park. Restrooms will be available.

All park rules will be enforced, including dogs always on leash, no alcohol, smoking, or grills.

Athens Water Festival

It's back! The annual Athens Water Festival at Sandy Creek Park! This special event is scheduled for Saturday, September 11 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. The Festival is free, however there is the $2 per person park entry fee.

Go for the gold in the H2Olympics as part of Athens' Team Water! The Athens Water Festival offers dozens of water-themed events and activities for the whole family! Touch sea life, lift pounds of water, and run through the spray of water. Bring a refillable water bottle and a swimsuit.

Twirl with the Best!

Classic City Majorettes offers instruction in dance-twirling, strutting, marching technique, and more! Program begins September 17. O nline registration is underway.

Classes available for students ages 5 and older and are held at Bishop Park under the covered tennis courts. Batons and uniforms are extra.

The Leisure Services Department announces its fall activity opportunities for 2021 featuring a diverse selection of activities highlighting the arts, environmental science, recreation, sports, and holiday events for adults and children.

Registration will continue until activities are at full enrollment or they begin.
