Municipal Court

Municipal Court Operations Update

On Saturday, March 14th, 2020, Chief Justice Harold D. Melton of the Georgia Supreme Court declared a statewide judicial emergency for the next 30 days in response to the coronavirus and its impact on our public health.

In order to help minimize exposure and contacts, the courts in Athens-Clarke County and the Western Judicial Circuit have scaled back court-related operations through April 13th. All non-essential court dates in the Municipal Court of Athens-Clarke County from now until April 13th are cancelled.

Municipal Court encourages individuals who have a court date from March 16 - April 13 to contact the Court and confirm their most current contact information. No failure to appear, contempt, or bench warrants will issue during the affected time period from March 16 - April 13. However, Municipal Court wants to ensure that individuals receive notice of their new court dates.

If you have a court date in Municipal Court during the affected time period, send an email to: Your email should include your full name, your complete mailing address, and a telephone number for receipt of text messages. You can also submit your contact information through our Court Date Reminder System enrollment form below. You should receive an email response within 7-10 days with information about your new court date. Municipal Court will also mail notices of the newly-assigned court dates and text court reminders for the new court dates.

You may also call Municipal Court at 706-613-3690, but since the Athens-Clarke County government could be on reduced services at times over the next 4 weeks, email communication is preferred. Clerks will be teleworking during these next 4 weeks and not always available to assist via phone during regular business hours.

The specific court appearances affected are as follows:

  • Arraignments (Criminal, Traffic and Ordinance) from March 16 - April 13 are cancelled.
  • Suspended sentence calendars set for 2:00 p.m. on March 16th, 23rd, and 30th, April 6th and April 13th are cancelled.
  • The Traffic Violators Impact Program set for March 17th is cancelled.
  • Red Light Camera and School Bus Camera cases set for March 18th are cancelled.
  • The Animal Welfare Class set for March 19th is cancelled.
  • The Bike & Bus Class set for March 20th is cancelled.
  • Ordinance and parking trials set for March 24th are cancelled.
  • All weddings scheduled in Municipal Court on March 19th and April 2nd are cancelled

The Municipal Court of Athens Clarke County is currently working with the Public Defender’s Office and the Solicitor General’s Office to determine who is being held on Municipal Court matters. Municipal Court will assess those individuals already confined, and will continue to monitor individuals arrested on offenses that come to Municipal Court, to ensure the swift release of those who do not pose a public safety risk.

In order to reduce future bookings during the affected time period, any bench warrants, arrest warrants or probation violation warrants that are not yet signed, will be thoroughly screened. Only in cases that entail a clear public safety risk will warrants be signed.

I want to recognize the assistance of TJ BeMent, our District 10 Court Administrator, and Jeff Montgomery, Athens-Clarke County Public Information Officer. They’ve been instrumental in helping craft the Court’s message and get word out to the public. I also need to give special recognition to Judy Clay, our Clerk of Court for Municipal Court, and her staff, who worked diligently last Friday to send out text alerts and reset notices to individuals who have court dates the week of March 16th. The staff of the Municipal Court of Athens-Clarke County will continue to do their best to assist the public in navigating Municipal Court during this difficult time.
