Skate Park Birthday Bash Time flies! The Skate Park at Southeast Clarke Park is turning 20! Opened in 2005, it is the only public skate park in Athens! The community is invited to the 20th Birthday Bash scheduled for Saturday, April 19 from noon to 8:00 p.m. The event includes live music, food trucks, and an artist and vendor market.

National Poetry MonthCelebrate National Poetry Month and place a call to Dial a Poem at 762-400-POEM. Enjoy a recorded selection of original poems by current ACCGov Poet Laureate Mikhayla Robinson Smith. Athens-Clarke County introduced the Poet Laureate program in 2020 with support from the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission.

An Evening with Justin Furstenfeld of Blue October at the Morton TheatreFor the past 15 years, Justin Furstenfeld’s one-man shows, "Open Book," have been celebrated for their transformative, heartfelt experiences.These performances combine acoustic renditions with deeply personal storytelling, offering fans an immersive look into his music and life. His reality-focused, unfiltered writing addresses the darker corners of life while finding hope and beauty, breaking down barriers between artist and audience. His new one-man show, "I Laugh At Myself,” focuses on his continuing journey from 2013 to the present, showcasing his ongoing transformation and dedication to becoming the best version of himself each day. .

Bears' Birthday PartyMake a wish! The Leisure Services Department will present a special birthday party for Bear Hollow Zoo’s resident bears Athena, DJ, and Yonah.
The Zoo will host this special birthday celebration Saturday, April 26 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
The community is invited to join this celebration and watch the bears unwrap their presents and enjoy their cake. A birthday card will be available to be signed by well-wishers and crafts. This program is free and open to the public.

Tickets on Sale!Athens Creative Theatre (ACT) presents The Cemetery Club at Quinn Hall located a Memorial Park in Athens Thursday, May 1 through Saturday, May 3 Three widows meet once a month for tea before going to visit their husbands’ graves. Ida is sweet tempered and ready to begin a new life; Lucille is a feisty embodiment of the girl who just wants to have fun; and Doris is priggish and judgmental, particularly when Sam the butcher enters the scene. He meets the widows while visiting his wife’s grave. Doris and Lucille squash the budding romance between Sam and Ida. Congratulations!Lay Park was the recent recipient of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. - Eta Omega Zeta Chapter’s 2025 Community Service Award.
The park and sorority have been long time partners with Zeta Phi Beta hosting school supply donations for the park’s after school program participants, as well as providing volunteers for community events. The award was presented at the 50th Anniversary Legacy of Empowerment, History, Achievements, and Values Award in March. Congratulations!

Learn to Swim this Summer!The Leisure Services Department offers small group swim lessons for children. All lessons are taught by certified lifeguards.
Opportunities include Kinderswim, a free learn to swim program for five year olds who live in Athens-Clarke County, as well as: The fee is $33 for ACC residents and $50 for non-residents for Swim School and Parent and Tot Swim School. Temporary ClosingLay Park, located at 297 Hoyt St., and Heard Park, located at 400 McKinley Dr. will temporarily close for one day for necessary electrical work at the community centers.
