Upcoming Meeting, May 1, 2025

Following Athens-Clarke County procedure, you are being notified as a subscriber to the Neighborhood Notification Initiative that the Planning Commission will hold a public hearing and consider the following proposals on Thursday May 1st at 6:00 PM in the Auditorium at 120 West Dougherty Street:

Proposals

  1. Special Use Permit at 581 S. Harris Street to demolish a vacant commercial restaurant and replace it with a surface parking lot
  2. Rezone at 610, 720, 730, & 760 Newton Bridge Road to build 184 Single-Family Attached Units (Townhomes) and 166 Single-Family Detached Units (350 Total Units)                                                                                                         
  3. Preliminary Planned Development Amendment at 100 & 130 Newton Bridge Road to build 200,000 sq. ft. of commercial office-flex space & 69 townhouse-style multi-family units
  4. Special Use Permit at 284 Bailey Street (Unit #410) to convert an existing multi-family unit to a commercial short-term rental
  5. Special Use Permit at 1580 Barnett Shoals Road (Unit #1010) to convert a multi-family unit into a commercial short-term rental
  6. Preliminary Planned Development at 1030, 1040, & 1060 Macon Highway & 100, 104, 110, 120, 140, & 150 Puritan Lane to build 70 townhouse-style multi-family units
  7. Text Amendment to amend Section 9-15-28 of the Code of Ordinances regarding Short-Term Rentals

Public Comment

In Person Comments

Residents are invited to provide public comment in person at Planning Commission meetings. Applicants and representatives of specified interest groups are provided ten minutes to address the Commission. All other speakers are provided three minutes.

Written or Email Comments

Written or emailed public comments received by the Planning Department no later than noon Wednesday, April 30th will be forwarded to the Planning Commission for their consideration prior to the hearing. 

After this date, written comments may be read into the record at the hearing, subject to the previously noted time limits for addressing the Commission. Comments will also be forwarded to the Mayor & Commission. 

Meeting Purpose

The purpose of the Planning Commission hearing is to be a forum for public comments in favor or in opposition to the proposal.

After the Planning Commission hearing, the Mayor & Commission are tentatively scheduled to consider the request at their Agenda Setting meeting on May 20th with a final vote tentatively scheduled for June 3, 2025. 

Public comment will be accepted at both the agenda setting and voting meetings.
