Brightly colored geometric mural on the side of a parking deck

WATCH: "Architecture of Imagination" mural

“Architecture of Imagination” by artist Kate Lewis is a large scale mural inspired by architecture and geometry. It is located on the outside of a parking deck next to Akins Ford Arena at the Classic Center.

Learn more about the mural in this video, which features an interview with Lewis, on the ACCGov YouTube channel. The video is also available on the ACCGov Roku channel.

Lewis’ design was chosen in a blind selection by a community panel. The Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission approved the design, along with two other artworks for the arena, in September 2023. Installation was completed in October 2024.

For more information on this and other public art, visit the ACCGov Public Art webpage at www.accgov.com/publicart.

Legal non-conforming short-term rental final list published

Short-term rentals (STRs) are defined as accommodations for transient guests where, in exchange for compensation of any type or amount, a residential dwelling unit is rented or otherwise provided for lodging for any period of time less than 31 consecutive days. These usually, but not exclusively, are advertised through websites such as Airbnb.com, Booking.com, Hometogo.com, and vrbo.com.

Following adoption of the STR Ordinance on February 6, 2024, ACCGov's Planning Department developed an initial list of STR properties of those in operation between September 19, 2022 and September 19, 2023. This list is known as the Legal Non-Conforming STR List. After a six month public review period between July 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024, the final list was published on March 1, 2025.

The properties on the final Legal Non-Conforming STR List do not currently conform to the STR Ordinance, but must come into compliance with the STR Ordinance within 24 months from the March 1, 2025 date when the final Legal Non-Conforming STR List was published.

STRs that are not on the Legal Non-Conforming STR List must comply with the STR Ordinance.

For more information on STRs and the STR Ordinance, visit accgov.com/str.

Neighborhood Notification Initiative (NNI)

The Neighborhood Notification Initiative, or NNI, was started in 2005 with the goal of improving communication between neighborhoods and developers about construction projects proposed in or adjacent to neighborhood boundaries.

Once an application is submitted to the Planning Department and placed on the appropriate agenda for review, a notice is sent to anyone registered to receive NNI notices for the neighborhoods, overlay areas and Commission Districts that the project falls within. Notices are sent by email or SMS text message.

There are 40 neighborhoods, 17 overlay districts, and 10 Commission districts - along with an option to receive all notices Athens-Clarke County-wide - available for subscribers, along with instructions for how residents can register their neighborhood as an NNI option.

Residents can sign-up for the NNI notices at accgov.com/nni or call the Planning Department at 706-613-3515 for more information.
