Howard Park Sign

A New Name!

The Leisure Services Department recently hosted a ceremony renaming the Rocksprings Park and Community Center the Christine W Howard Park and Community Center after the longtime center staff member.
Mrs. Howard, a native Athenian, began her tenure in the early 1960's, initially as a volunteer and then as an employee.  Her promotion of community involvement, education, and sports continued until her retirement in 1999.  She served as a mentor to thousands of young people who participated in center activities.  She was also committed to the senior citizens of the community and provided popular activities and programs to keep them active and engaged.
In 2023, the name change was approved by the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission.
