A huge part of the process is knowing what the community values and discovering where we need to focus our efforts in the future. You can help us by sharing your thoughts at www.accgov.com/activateathens or you can do so in person at one of the many scheduled sessions. Firefly Bridge over Trail Creek AwardsThe Leisure Services Department’s Firefly Bridge over Trail Creek project has garnered attention and multiple honors, including a national award. These accolades recognize outstanding efforts in public engagement and design all highlighting the Firefly Bridge over Trail Creek. This project involved the redesign of what was commonly referred to as the R.E.M. Murmur Trestle. The iconic bridge that was featured on the back cover of the R.E.M. EP “Murmur” was built in 1888. The trestle was part of Georgia’s first state-chartered railroad, which opened in 1841 between Athens and Augusta. The project has been honored with five awards, three state, one local, and one national. As part of the 2023 Georgia Transportation Summit which includes the Georgia Department of Transportation, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, and more than 1400 transportation leaders, the Georgia Partnership for Transportation Quality (GPTQ) for Preconstruction Design recognized the Firefly Bridge over Trail Creek as a finalist in 3 of 10 categories. The ACCGov Leisure Services/SPLOST Team with Design Team Kimley-Horn were awarded “Best Project in the Context Sensitive Planning and Design” including Public Participation Plan category. This award recognizes the important role the planning process plays in determining the best overall solution, in other words the Department won an award for amazing community engagement to create a new design for this iconic bridge. Additionally, GPTQ honored Firefly Bridge over Trail Creek with a second award, the “Grand Prize Award” presented to the project best overall out of the 10 award categories. The American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia presented the project with the first place “Engineering Excellence State Award for Structural Systems.” The American Council of Engineering Companies designated Firefly Bridge over Trail Creek as a “National Recognition Award” winner. Locally, Historic Athens presented the project with the “Innovative Solutions in Rehabilitation Award” for 2024 during their 55th Annual Preservation Awards ceremony. The award recognizes projects that exhibit sensitive and create solutions to older or historic building without compromising integrity or character.
