Movies by Moonlight

"Movies by Moonlight" at Bishop Park

The Leisure Services Department will host a free “Movies by Moonlight” outdoor movie event on Friday, May 17 at 8:45 p.m. at Bishop Park at 705 Sunset Drive.

The event will feature the 2023 film “Paw Patrol -The Mighty Movie.”

The evening begins at 7:00 p.m. with “Touch a Truck.” This area includes a variety of vehicles to explore representing the ACCGov Fire, Solid Waste, and Police Departments including a K-9 officer.  The Athens Pop up Park will be onsite, as well.  Athens-Clarke County Library staff will lead a craft activity and story time.

Registration is not required.  Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and will sit on the ground to watch the film on the large inflatable screen. Food and beverages will not be sold or provided at the park. Restrooms and water fountains will be available until the end of the screening. 

All park rules will be enforced, including; dogs always on leash, no alcohol, no smoking, and no grills/cooking.

Yoga

"Yoga under the Stars" at Sandy Creek Nature Center

Join a yoga instructor and Sandy Creek Nature Center staff for the inaugural Yoga Under the Stars. Attendees will meet in the Nature Center's planetarium for this out of this world experience. Please bring your own mat for the program.

This program is for ages 18 and older and is scheduled for Friday, May 17 from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. The fee is $5 per person.  Online registration is underway.

Aquatics

Make a Splash!

The Leisure Services Department announces its pool season for the upcoming summer.

Pools open Saturday, May 25 for the summer Memorial Day pool hours are 1:00 – 5:30 p.m.  Pools close for the season Sunday, July 28.

The Department will operate four public pools this summer including Heard Park, 400 McKinley Drive; Lay Park, 297 Hoyt Street; Memorial Park, 293 Gran Ellen Drive; and Rocksprings Park, 291 Henderson Extension.  The Bishop Park pool is closed for renovations.  

During the aquatics season, pools are open Tuesday-Friday and Sundays, 1:00 – 5:30 p.m.  Pool hours are noon – 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays.  All pools and splash pads are closed on Mondays for maintenance.

Pool and splash pad admission is $1 per person, cash only. Pool passes are available for purchase and may be used at both splash pads and at all of the Department’s public pools.  Individual pool passes are $20 and Family of Four pool passes are $40.  Passes may be purchased on-site with forms of payment accepted including cash and check.

Free Pool Passes

The Leisure Services Department continues a special summer program celebrating students with good grades.
In order to be eligible, any student, Kindergarten through 12th grade, who resides in Athens-Clarke County must take a copy of the student’s final report card or equivalent to a Leisure Services facility office where a pool or splash pad is located.  Those sites include Heard Park, Lay Park, Memorial Park, Rocksprings Park, and Walker Park.  The Bishop Park pool remains closed for the 2024 aquatics season. 

A report card with all A's or all E's guarantees a free summer pool pass. A report card with all A's and B's, or all E's and M's, is good for 10 free swims.

Fashion Show

Stylin'

The Lyndon House Arts Center is pleased to present Rescue: Waste & Redemption Fashion Show on Thursday, May 23 at 6:00 p.m.   This Fashion Show coincides with the art exhibition of the same name guest curated by Lizzie Zucker Saltz.  

Attendees will enjoy a runway style event featuring original garments and jewelry made with materials that otherwise would be designated for the landfill. Accompanying the artists and models will be Jon Vogt's sound orchestration linked to his artwork, Creek Treats, currently on display in the Rescue art exhibition.

Rescue Fashion Show is co-organized by Andrea Trombetta and Paula Reynaldi.  Artists included in the fashion show include Adah Bennion, Emily Peters, Sugar und Salt Designs (Lizzie Zucker Saltz), Andrea Trombetta, Paula Reynaldi, Susan Lenz and Kate Windley. The Arts Center Teen Fashion and Sewing Club will be joining the show under the direction of Tabitha Fielteau.   The Arts Center's advanced weavers, directed by Andrea Trombetta will also be showcasing their new woven works

All exhibitions are free of charge and open to the public.  Exhibitions are on view during regular gallery hours Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  Children must be accompanied by an adult

Facility

Temporary Closings

Sandy Creek Nature Center, located at 205 Old Commerce Rd, will briefly close the Exhibit Hall for building renovations.  This temporary closure will take place Thursday, May 16 – Tuesday, May 21.  The Nature Center will re-open on Wednesday, May 22 at 8:30 a.m.  The Nature Center’s classroom, gift shop, and trails will remain open to the public.
 
Bear Hollow Zoo will temporarily close Tuesday, May 28 through Thursday, May 30 for necessary maintenance work.  The Zoo will re-open Friday, May 31 at 8:00 a.m.  Memorial Park will remain open during this time.

Splash Pad

Both Splash Pads Open for the Summer Season

The Walker Park Splash Pad, located at 200 Trail Creek Street, and the Rocksprings Park Splash Pad, located at 291 Henderson Ext., will operate under regular seasonal hours from Saturday, May 25 - Sunday, July 28.  Currently, the Walker Park Splash Pad is open weekends, only.
Splash pad hours of operation are 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.  The splash pad is closed on Mondays for maintenance.

Creek Adventure

"Secret Creek Adventure" 

at the Nature Center

Take the path less traveled to a special creek. Splash in the cooling waters of a little stream on a guided creek walk at Sandy Creek Nature Center
Participants will discover the rocks, plants and tiny creatures that call this hidden gem home. Bring water, wear sturdy shoes for walking and bring an extra pair for the creek such as swim shoes, crocks, or action sandals.
This program is for ages 8 and older and is set for Saturday, May 18 at 11:00 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.  
The fee is $5 for ACC residents and $7.50 for non-residents.  Online registration is required.

Memorial Day Holiday Hours

The Leisure Services Department's parks will operate under regular hours of operation on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27.  Facilities will be closed. 
All pools and the Rocksprings Park Splash Pad will be open on Memorial Day from 1:00 – 5:30 p.m. Walker Park Splash Pad will be open 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.  There is a $1 admission fee to all pools and splash pads.  The Bishop Park Pool is closed for the season for renovations.

All parks and facilities will reopen Tuesday, May 28 under regular hours of operation.
