On Stage...The East Athens Educational Dance Center (EAEDC) presents its fall production of “Dancing Through Light” at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 21st, 2023 at the EAEDC located at 390 McKinley Drive.
“Dancing Through Light" is a showcase of dance highlighting the gifted students enrolled in East Athens Educational Dance Center’s Accelerated Programs. Featuring ballet, modern, tap, African and contemporary dance; dancers will perform choreography exploring various themes of expression and emotions. The performance will also demonstrate and illuminate the process of creating a performance from its preparation to the onstage presentation. It will conclude with exhilarating African Dance choreography.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 the day of the show (pending availability). Tickets are on sale and are available online or call 706-613-3624 for more information.

Bird Seed Sale UnderwayThe Annual Birdseed Sale is underway at Sandy Creek Nature Center and is sponsored by Sandy Creek Nature Center, Inc., the non-profit support organization.
Help support the Nature Center by ordering bird seed through this annual sale, no order is too large or too small! A variety of bird seed is available in multiple sizes. This year, in addition to traditional seed blends, there are a selection of Wild Birds Unlimited products, including cylinders and gourmet seed blends. Be sure to try out something new!
Early Orders are due by October 31.Orders may be placed online at www.sandycreeknaturecenterinc.org.
Proceeds from this sale support Sandy Creek Nature Center, Inc., the non-profit support organization which founded the nature center more than 50 years ago and now works in partnership with Athens Clarke County to support the environmental education and preservation mission of the Nature Center, a facility of the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department.

Winter Program Online Registration Begins Nov 4The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department announces its winter program opportunities for 2023-2024 A diverse selection highlighting the arts, environmental science, recreation, sports, and holiday events are planned for adults and children.
Online program registration for Athens-Clarke County residents will open at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 4. Non-residents may register online starting Monday, November 6 at noon. Before registering, individuals who have not already done so must establish a free online account at www.accgov.com/myrec Payment may be rendered using an American Express, debit card, Discover Card, MasterCard, Visa, or a MasterCard or Visa gift card.
Registration will continue until programs are at full enrollment or they begin.
New scholarship applicants and individuals with expired scholarships must visit a Leisure Services Department facility office to apply for a scholarship or to renew an expired one at least five business days prior to registering for a program. Scholarships may not be applied for online. Information regarding scholarship program changes, including required documentation, is available at www.accgov.com/scholarship

Call for Downtown Parade of Lights Entries!The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department announces that entries are now being accepted for the 2023 Athens-Clarke County Downtown Parade of Lights. This year’s parade is scheduled for Thursday, December 7. The deadline for entries is Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. Late applications are not accepted.
The online application is available at www.accgov.com/parade The parade application fee is $40.
Annually, more than 60 entries compete for such prizes as “Most Original Float,” “Best Use of Theme, “ and “Best Use of Lights” and the best overall float receiving the “Mayor’s Award.” This year’s theme is “An Art Filled Holiday.” The Parade Marshal is local iconic artist Harold Rittenberry, Jr., known for his metal sculptures installed around Athens.
The parade begins on the corner of Hancock Avenue and Pulaski Street ending in front of City Hall for the traditional Community Christmas Tree lighting ceremony.
The Athens-Clarke County Downtown Parade of Lights is sponsored by the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government and the Athens Downtown Development Authority.

"Sweeney Todd" at the Morton TheatreAthens Creative Theatre (ACT) presents “Sweeney Todd” at the Morton TheatreAn unjustly exiled barber, returns to nineteenth century London, seeking vengeance against the lecherous judge who framed him and ravaged his young wife. The road to revenge leads Todd to Mrs. Lovett, a resourceful proprietress of a failing pie shop, above which, he opens a new barber practice. Mrs. Lovett's luck sharply shifts when Todd's thirst for blood inspires the integration of an ingredient into her meat pies that has the people of London lining up... and the carnage has only just begun.The performance takes place at the Morton Theatre in downtown Athens on Thursday, November 16 -Sunday, November 19. Introduction toMountain Bike SkillsIn this Introductory Mountain Bike Skills Class, participants will explore the foundations of mountain bike skills which include body position, speed control and cornering among other important techniques to help you move to the next level of trail riding.Enjoy some trail time at Walker Park in an easy going and focused environment. This will be an on the bike experience. We will move through the trail system as we learn and apply the skills as we go. Instructor Jason Hubbard is a Level 1 Professional Mountain Bike Instructor Association (PMBIA) Instructor, former interscholastic mountain bike coach, and XC racer.This program is for ages 18 and older and is scheduled for Saturday, November 4 from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Walker Park. Online registration is underway.The fee is $25 for ACC residents and $37.50 for non-residents. This will be a three hour course. Please bring enough water and snacks to suit your needs for that amount of time, a helmet, as well as a geared mountain bike that is in good working order.For more information, please call 706-613-3620.
