Moon over Buffalo

"Moon over Buffalo" at Quinn Hall

Athens Creative Theatre presents “Moon Over Buffalo” by Ken Ludwig at Quinn Hall located at Memorial Park Thursday. May 4 through Saturday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. 

The play follows the story of Charlotte and George Hay who are on tour in Buffalo in 1953 with a repertory consisting of Cyrano de Bergerac (the “revised, one nostril version”) and Noel Coward’s Private Lives, when they receive word that they might have one last shot at stardom: Frank Capra, an important theatre critic, is coming to town to see their matinee. 

Show times are Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m.. Tickets are now on sale online, by phone at 706-613-3770, or in person at the Morton Theatre Box Office located at 195 W. Washington Street Mondays through Fridays from 12 -4:00 p.m.. Tickets are $15 each. Discounted rates are available for groups of 10 or more.  

Splash Pad

Make a Splash!

The splash pad at Walker Park (formerly Trail Creek Park) will open under its pre-season hours on Saturday, May 13 from 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.  Splash pad admission is $1 per person.

The Walker Park Splash Pad, located at 200 Trail Creek St, will be open weekends only, Saturday, May 13-Sunday, May 21 and will then operate under regular seasonal hours from Saturday, May 27- Sunday, July 30.  The splash pad will be open weekends only, August 5-27.  Splash pad hours of operation are 10:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.  The splash pad is closed on Mondays for maintenance.

The Rocksprings Park Splash Pad, located at 291 Henderson Ext, will open for the season May 27.

The pools open Memorial Day weekend and close the last weekend of July.  The Bishop Park pool is closed for the summer for renovations.

Pool passes are available for purchase and may be used at both splash pads and at all of the Department’s four public pools.  Individual pool passes are $20 and Family of Four pool passes are $40.  Passes may be purchased onsite with forms of payment accepted including cash and check.

Planets of Our Social System

Be part of the next planetarium program in the Sky Center at Sandy Creek Nature Center. Everyone will journey through the night sky, exploring the great beyond.

This session is scheduled for Saturday, May 20 from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.  This program is for ages five and older.  Children under 13 must be accompanied by a registered adult.  Online registration is required.  The fee is $5  for ACC residents and $7.50 for  Non-residents

Snake Day

Snake Day

The Leisure Services Department will host Snake Day on Saturday, May 13 from noon to 4:00 p.m. at Sandy Creek Nature Center.

Want to learn more about snakes?  Then slither out to the annual Snake Day where experts will be on hand to answer questions and fascinate you with snake facts.  Activities will include animal interaction, crafts, and games.

This program is for families with a $5 admission fee per person.

Report Card

Good Grades = Pool Passes

The Report Cards Rewards Program returns for another summer of celebrating academic achievement

In order to be eligible, any student, Kindergarten through 12th grade, who resides in Athens-Clarke County must take a copy of the student’s final report card or equivalent to a Leisure Services pool or splash pad during the aquatics season.  Locations include Heard Park, Lay Park, Memorial Park, or Rocksprings Park pool or the Walker Park splash pad.  The Bishop Park pool is closed for the summer for renovations.

A report card with all A's or all E's guarantees a free summer pool pass. A report card with all A's and B's, or all E's and M's, is good for 10 free swims.

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday!

Make a wish!  The Leisure Services Department will present a special birthday party for Bear Hollow Zoo’s resident bears Athena, DJ, and Yonah.  

The Zoo will host this special re-scheduled celebration on Saturday, May 13 from 10:00 a..m. – 1:00 p.m.  

The community is invited to join this celebration and watch the bears unwrap their presents and enjoy their cake.  A birthday card will be available to be signed by well-wishers, as well as crafts, and ambassador animal encounters.

Tournament


Petanque Tournament at Lay Park

FPUSA SE Regional Triples Tournament, hosted by Classic City Petanque Club, is scheduled for May 20-21, at Lay Park. 

Twenty triples teams from Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and North Carolina  will compete for gold, silver, and bronze medals in addition to cash prizes in the Concours bracket and cash prizes in the Consolante bracket. Some of the players have competed for and won national titles and have also represented the U.S. in Petanque tournaments in China and Cambodia.  

Games begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Classic City Petanque Club facility at Lay Park and will continue throughout the day. 

Visitors are welcome and encouraged to attend.
