?? Show Our Waterways Some Love ??
With Valentine's Day right around the corner, many of you may be thinking about how to celebrate those that you love. We want to also encourage you to show some love to our waterways here in Athens-Clarke County. The water that flows into our storm drains flows directly into our waterways, without passing through a water treatment plant. Stormwater picks up chemicals, trash, and other pollutants that contaminate our waterways, so our streams, creeks, and rivers can be seriously impacted by stormwater. In Athens-Clarke County, we have almost 70 miles of impaired waters. Here are some easy ways that you can show our waterways some extra love this Valentine's Day: - Clean up litter around your neighborhood with a loved one.
- Get your car checked for oil, gas, or antifreeze leaks
- Make sure you pick up after your pet! Bag and trash their poop.
- Use environmentally friendly alternatives to pesticides and fertilizers.
- Pick up after yourself! Recycle properly and throw away things that cannot be recycled.
- Consider building a rain garden if you're able to. Rain gardens can catch runoff and filter out pollutants before they enter storm drains.
- Report water pollution, flooding, or dumping to 706-614-1282. You can call or text this number and all reports remain anonymous.
