Halloween Double Feature!The Leisure Services Department will host a free “Movies by Moonlight” double feature outdoor movie on Saturday, October 22 at 7:15 p.m. at Walker Park located at 211 Trail Creek Street. The event features “Tim Burton’s A Nightmare before Christmas” at 7:15 p.m. followed by “Beetlejuice” at 9:00 p.m. Registration is not required. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and will sit on the upper field to watch the films on the large inflatable screen. Costumes are welcomed for this spooky night. Upon arrival, patrons will be directed to the movie viewing area. Everyone should bring their own refreshments. Food and beverages will not be sold or provided at the park. Restrooms will be available. All park rules will be enforced, including dogs always on leash, no alcohol, no smoking, and no grills. For more information, call 706-613-3800. |
BasketballIt's time to hit the court and enroll for youth basketball! This program provides a top quality basketball experience for youth and teens ages 5-14. The league will focus on teaching fundamental basketball skills, leadership, sportsmanship, team work, as well as enhancing the mental and physical development of each participant. The purpose of the youth basketball league is to encourage young male and female athletes ages 5 to 14 to learn about the sport, develop their basketball skills, and learn to interact with other children in a positive manner. 2022 Downtown Parade of Lights!The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department announces that applications are now being accepted for the 2022 Athens-Clarke County Downtown Parade of Lights. This year’s theme is "An Out of this World Holiday." The parade is scheduled for Thursday, December 1. The deadline for entry applications is Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. Late applications are not accepted. Online applications may be completed and submitted at www.accgov.com/parade. The parade entry fee is $40. Payment can be rendered online or by check, payable to “Athens-Clarke County.” Annually, more than 60 entries compete for such prizes as “Most Original Float,” “Best Use of Theme,“ “Best Use of Lights” and the best overall float receives the “Mayor’s Award.” The parade begins on the corner of Hancock Avenue and Pulaski Street, travels through downtown ending in front of City Hall for the traditional Community Christmas Tree lighting ceremony. Winter Registration Begins November 5The Leisure Services Department announces its winter program opportunities for 2022-2023 A diverse selection of activities highlighting the arts, environmental science, recreation, sports, and holiday events are planned for adults and children. The Department will implement a “rolling registration.” Program online registration for Athens-Clarke County residents will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 5. Non-residents may register online starting Monday, November 7 at noon. Online registration takes place at www.accgov.com/myrec Before registering, individuals who have not already done so must establish a free online account at www.accgov.com/myrec . Payment may be rendered using a debit card, American Express, Discover Card, MasterCard, Visa, or a MasterCard or Visa gift card. Registration will continue until programs are at full enrollment or they begin. Individuals with expired scholarships and new scholarship applicants must visit a Leisure Services Department facility office at least five business days prior to registering for a program. Scholarships must be applied for in person. Information regarding the scholarship program, including required documentation, is available at www.accgov.com/scholarship. "RE-" Student Art ExhibitionThe Lyndon House Arts Center (LHAC) announces the opening of the Biennial program, “RE-”, the Clarke County School District Student Art Exhibition. The opening reception is set for Tuesday, October 18 from through January 14, 2023. LHAC is excited to welcome this ongoing partnership with the Clarke County School District that celebrates the creative youth in our community and the importance of art education. Following these pandemic years, we worked to develop a theme for the exhibit reflective of our shared experience and the hopeful possibilities of rebuilding together. The exhibit includes works by students from Kindergarten to 12th grade and will include collage, drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, and weaving. Also included are a number of large collaborative artworks by classrooms and grades. This year, we are also pleased to announce a partnership with Athens Downtown Development Authority (ADDA). This fall, the ADDA will install streetlight banners throughout downtown featuring the youth artworks. The “RE-” exhibition is accompanied by a beautiful publication with each student artist’s work pictured. Thank you to all the supporters and sponsors who make this publication possible. All exhibitions are free of charge and open to the public. Exhibitions are on view during regular gallery hours Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The story is an evocative tale of two men – one, a doctor; the other, a terrifying madman – and two women.
