19 Days of Juneteenth

Be part of the Athens-Clarke County's official celebration of Juneteenth!

According to the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation:  "On June 19th, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, General Granger issued General No. 3 advising all, that slaves had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation and it was posted on the door of Reedy Chapel. Thus, began what is now known as Juneteenth. It is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States."

The Athens community is invited to acknowledge, commemorate, and honor Juneteenth by joining in a community-led, community-wide "19 Days of Juneteenth" celebration.

Activities include concerts, films, lectures, special podcasts, and even an outdoor movie, and much more.  Events will take place across the community at a variety of locations including churches, Lay Park, Lyndon House Arts Center, Morton Theatre, and West Broad Farmers Market.
  • Tour of the historic Morton Theatre is planned for Thursday, June 16. Morton Theatre is one of the first vaudeville theatres in the United States uniquely built, owned, and operated by an African-American businessman: Monroe Morton. Experience it firsthand with a tour of the building, with anecdotes and historical stories of many black owned businesses, and discover why "Hot Corner" still plays an important role in the downtown Athens area. This one-hour tour will be led by facility supervisor Lynn Green who began her Morton Theatre career in 1997. Please wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to climb stairs. Registration required.
  • "Movie in the Park: Harriet" is planned for Friday, June 17 at the Lyndon House Arts Center. Bring blankets and chairs to view "Harriet" on the beautiful lawn of this beloved downtown location
  • "Juneteenth Celebration at the West Broad Farmers Market is planned for Saturday, June 18 at Rocksprings Community Center and Park. Celebrate Juneteenth at the West Broad Farmers Market with home cooked meals, an interactive Kids Zone, and meet local entrepreneurs and farmers.
  • "Juneteenth is the New 4th" Outdoor Festival is planned for Saturday, June 18 at Holland Youth Sports Complex.  This day will consist of field day games, food trucks, kickball tournament, kid's zone, live music, and a pop up market. Trust us, you don't to miss this community-wide family reunion style event!
