19 Days of JuneteenthThis year will mark the first Athens-Clarke County official celebration of Juneteenth!
According to the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation: "On June 19th, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, General Granger issued General No. 3 advising all, that slaves had been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation and it was posted on the door of Reedy Chapel. Thus, began what is now known as Juneteenth. It is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States."
The Athens community is invited to acknowledge, commemorate, and honor Juneteenth by joining in a community-led, community-wide 19 Days of Juneteenth celebration.
Activities include cooking demonstrations, concerts, films, lectures, special podcasts, and even an outdoor movie, and much more. Events will take place across the community at a variety of locations including churches, Lay Park, Lyndon House Arts Center, Morton Theatre, and West Broad Farmers Market.
"Juneteenth is the New 4th" Outdoor Festival is planned for Saturday, June 18 at Holland Youth Sports Complex. This day will consist of food trucks, kickball tournament, field day games, kid's zone, live music, and a pop up market. Trust us, you don't to miss this community-wide family reunion style event.
A complete list of activities and more Juneteenth history is available at www.accgov.com/juneteenth
