Who is the Best?The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department was recently honored by the Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA) with awards recognizing outstanding achievement. For the ninth time in 19 years, the Department received the prestigious Georgia Recreation and Park Association’s state “Agency Award” for populations of 80,000 -150,000. The award is based on outstanding programs and accomplishments over the past year. This recognition is particularly significant because it is voted on by Recreation professionals.Department staff were recognized with awards, as well. Program Specialist Emily Mann received the state “Athletics/ Aquatics Network Distinguished Professional.” Maintenance Supervisor Jim Ferguson received the GRPA District 7 “Facilities and Ground Professional” award. Leisure Services Department Director Kent Kilpatrick was honored with the GRPA District 7 Roy Hammond Leadership Award. This award recognizes professionals for cumulative, exemplary service to the state, profession and district.“Trail Team Six,” a devoted group of local volunteers, received three awards for their commitment to the Department’s trails. This hardworking group received two state awards including State Volunteer and the Maintenance Network Volunteer of the Year, as well as the GRPA District 7 Volunteer Award.Congratulations!

Let's Go to the Movies!The Department will host “Movies by Moonlight,” presenting two holiday favorites on Friday, December 17 at Sandy Creek Park.
Celebrate the holidays with an outdoor double feature with two films including “The Year Without a Santa Claus” and “The Muppet Christmas Carol.” Bring blankets and chairs to enjoy classic films on the lawn. Warm up with s'mores, hot chocolate, and apple cider around the fire, enjoy holiday music, and bring your letters to drop in Santa's mailbox.
Patrons are invited to socially distance on picnic blankets and chairs to enjoy the films outside (not a drive in). Online registration is underway with one ticket per group/vehicle.
Gates open at 5:15 p.m. with free park admission. The classic “The Year without Santa Claus” will be shown at 6:00 p.m. Intermission will feature a sing along and complimentary hot chocolate and s’mores. The second part of the double feature, “The Muppet Christmas Carol,” will begin at 7:15 p.m.
This event is free, including park admission, and is open to the public. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Downtown Parade of Lights -
Now on ACTV!A video of the 2021 Downtown Parade of Lights will broadcast daily on ACTV, the Athens-Clarke County government access television channel, at 8:00 AM, 2:00 PM, 8:00 PM, and 2:00 AM, except when pre-empted by broadcasts or rebroadcasts of Mayor and Commission meetings. The parade will air through Friday, December 31. The video runs approximately 42 minutes.The parade video is also available online for on-demand viewing through the Athens-Clarke County website at w ww.accgov.com/parade or w ww.accgov.com/videos and the official Athens-Clarke County YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/accgov. Residents with a Roku, Apple TV, or other streaming video devices can also find the ACCGov YouTube channel through the YouTube app by searching for 'accgov.' In addition to airing the 2021 parade, ACTV will broadcast a special marathon of back-to-back Downtown Parade of Lights videos from 2003-2021 on repeat during the 48 hours of December 24 and 25. ACTV is programmed and managed by the Athens-Clarke County Public Information Office. ACTV can be viewed on Charter Cable Channel 180 and online. Original Art for Santa's SleighIt's a "wrap" - especially when it is art!
To continue with the campaign of Shop Local Buy Art, Lyndon House Arts Center will host a unique artist market on Saturday, December 18 from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., as well as a Third Thursday evening on December 16 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Featured artists include Bee Natural, Amanda Burk, Denise Burns, Creations by Rise, Will Eskridge, Jadin Fielteau, H Camren Gober, Leslie Grove, Hannah Jones, Will Langford, Leslie Litt, Sara Parker, Suzanne Reeves, Ciel Rodriguez, Lily Smith, William Stephanos, Margo Rosenbaum, Jim Talley, TinkerWagon, and others. Holiday HoursLeisure Services Department facilities and parks will be closed Friday, December 24, and Saturday, December 25 in observance of the Christmas holiday. Department parks will be open for self directed use on Thursday, December 23. Facilities and parks will re-open Sunday, December 26 with regular hours of operation.
The New Year’s Day holiday will be observed on Friday, December 31 and Saturday, January 1. All park grounds will operate under reduced hours of 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with all facilities closed.
Regular hours of operation for all parks and facilities will resume Sunday, January 2, 2022.

Scholarships allow participants to pay less than the program fee.
