Women in Science

Ladies First!

The Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department will host a virtual “Women in Science” program at Sandy Creek Nature Center.

This program is planned for Saturday, April 24.  A variety of videos will be shared throughout the day through Facebook and YouTube. This program is for all ages and is free of charge. Women in Science Kits are available for purchase for $5 to go along with some of the videos.  Kits are geared for 7-12 years olds.

Swim School

Make a Splash!

The Leisure Services Department offers swim lessons for children three years and older at the Bishop Park, East Athens Community Center, and Lay Park pools.   
 
“Swim School” at Bishop Park, at 705 Sunset Drive, East Athens Community Center, at 400 McKinley Dr, and at Lay Park located at 297 Hoyt Street.

“Parent/Tot Swim School” at Bishop Park is for children, ages 6 months-3 years.

Each session fee is $33 for Athens-Clarke County residents and $50 for non-county residents.  Scholarships are available for qualifying Athens-Clarke County residents.  

The Department’s Kinderswim program is a free initiative with the goal of helping ACC children learn how to swim. The program is offered to all Athens-Clarke County 5-year-old children at no cost.  The lessons are broken into three, 45-minute classes a week for three weeks, for a total of nine lessons, and are available at all of the Department pools.

Summer Camp Online
Registration Continues!

There is still room! Summer camp online registration continues.  

Camp listings and online registration are available at www.accgov.com/myrec.

In November 2020, Leisure Services switched to a new online registration system. Parents who have not already established a free online account since November must do so at www.accgov.com/myrec .

Scholarships are available for qualifying ACC residents. Parents who wish to apply for a scholarship must do so in person at a Leisure Services Department facility office.  Applicants must apply for a scholarship at least five business days prior to registering for a program or camp.  Applicants must have a valid email address.  More information, including required documentation, is available at www.accgov.com/scholarship. 

Leisure Services has established COVID-19 camp protocols and policies that are available at www.accgov.com/camp, in accordance with CDC and American Camp Association guidelines and recommendations.  Camp numbers are reduced and face masks are required by all campers and staff.

Thank You!

This week is National Volunteer Week! The Leisure Services Department thanks its hardworking volunteers!

In spite of the pandemic, in 2020, 562 volunteers
contributed 7,082 hours of service throughout the Department.  Thank you to our volunteers!

The Independent Sector, a volunteer advocacy organization, estimates the value of one hour of volunteer service in 2020 at $27.20  Using this statistic, in the past year the dollar value of volunteer work within Leisure Services totaled $192,630.40.

Masks On

Park and Facility Update

All Department parks and facilities continue to operate .All Department parks and facilities continue to operate under restricted use and limited public access. The following restrictions are in effect for the immediate future:

• Athletic fields and gymnasiums are open. 

• Basketball, pickleball, tennis, and volleyball courts as well as playgrounds are open. Dog park access is limited.  Bear Hollow Zoo is open.

• Morton Theatre remains closed.

Face covers must be worn at all parks and facilities. People are reminded to continue to limit close contact, practice physical distancing measures, wash or sanitize hands frequently, and follow group gathering and other guidelines per the governor's statewide executive orders.
