Rivers Alive Wrap-Up Athens' 22nd annual Rivers Alive Waterway Clean-up was held on Saturday, October 24. Although this year's event looked a bit different due to COVID-19, we ended up leading an incredibly successful (and safe) clean-up effort, with 158 dedicated volunteers turning out to work at 20 different sites around our community. Overall, 2.62 tons (5,250 pounds) of trash and recycling, 840 pounds of metal, 71 tires, and 4.23 tons of leaf and limb debris/invasive species were removed from our waterways and natural areas. In addition to those stats, 8 families/groups registered to host their own independent clean-ups around town during the month of October.
While we did not host a Trash 2 Treasure contest this year, we were able to put together some awesome prize baskets as a thank you for our volunteers. Brone Stewart from the Pulaski Creek site was the winner of our duffle bag giveaway - generously donated by Half-Moon Outfitters. The package also included gift cards to several local businesses who have supported Rivers Alive in the past, including Mama’s Boy, Jittery Joe’s Coffee, and Golden Pantry.
Thank you to all of the volunteers for rolling with this year's changes, and continuing to support waterway clean-up efforts in our community. We hope you all will join us again next year!

Celebrate Geography on GIS Day National GIS Day falls on Wednesday, November 18, 2020. GIS (or Geographic Information System) is an integral part of stormwater management, from creating maps of stormwater infrastructure and polluted streams, to tracking the placement of green infrastructure practices. Geography is embedded into almost everything we do.
In honor of this national celebration, ACC Stormwater is encouraging everyone to participate in our official Geocache GeoTrail, “Water Logged.” The geocache trail, which brings participants up close and personal with several examples of stormwater management and green infrastructure, launched in 2015. Interested participants should visit our Educational Activities for Home webpage for direct links to the geocache postings. Anyone who completes the trail and logs all caches is eligible to receive a prize! All you need is a cell phone with GPS and internet access.
For more information, email stormwater@accgov.com or call 706-613-3440.
