ACCGov Reopens Select Parks and Plans for Summer Season

The Leisure Services Department announces the reopening of select locations including Ben Burton, Memorial, and Walker Parks (formerly Trail Creek Park).  Sandy Creek Park is open, as well.  Dudley Park, the Firefly, Greenway, and Sandy Creek Nature Center trails will remain open. All other parks and facilities remain closed at this time.

Ben Burton Park is open to permit access to fishing, open space, boat launch, and trails for public use.  There is no restroom access.

Memorial Park will permit access to fishing, open space, picnic shelters (small gatherings only), and trails for public use.  The playground, basketball court, dog park, and Bear Hollow Zoo will remain closed. Restroom access will be limited.

Sandy Creek Park is offering access to disc golf, fishing, open space, private dog parks (by reservation), picnic areas (small gatherings only), and trails for public use. The beach, large pavilions, playgrounds, basketball & volleyball courts, and public dog park will remain closed. Restroom access will be limited. Park entrance is $2 per person for ages 4-64, all others are admitted free of charge. Payment options include annual passes, punch cards, and credit/debit cards.  Cash will not be accepted.

Walker Park, formerly Trail Creek Park, permit access to open space, picnic shelter (small gatherings only), bike trails, and walking paths. Athletic fields are available for self-directed play, but closed for competitive and team use. The outdoor fitness zone, playground, and splash pad remain closed. Restroom access will be limited.

The public is reminded to continue social distancing and gatherings must be limited to 10 people or fewer. Masks are recommended.
In response to the current health concerns and safety at this time, all Leisure Services Department sponsored events, programs, rentals, and classes are suspended through May

The Department plans to open pools and splash pads the weekend of July 4, 2020 and hopes to begin all summer camps the week of July 6th. These dates have been identified with anticipation that Covid-19 conditions improve and will provide time to train our seasonal staff and prepare for summer activities. The health and safety of the Athens area community, including our campers and staff, is our utmost priority.

All individuals who are currently registered for summer camp or swim lessons in June will be given the option to register for any available July camp or swim session, or receive a full refund.

The anticipated updated dates for aquatics facilities to be open are July 4 – August 2, 2020.  After pools close, Walker Park Splash Pad will continue to be open on the weekends through Labor Day on Monday, September 7, 2020.
