Why 100%? Green Jobs, Energy Justice, Lower Bills, Cleaner Air

Transitioning to clean and renewable energy means more than just installing solar panels.  To meet the goal, Athens-Clarke County will invest in energy efficiency renovations and upgrades, electrify transportation systems, install solar panels, and purchase renewable energy certificates from sources outside of Athens-Clarke County:  initiatives that affect every citizen.

The ACC resolution calls for these efforts to be carried out in a manner that redresses historic inequities and focuses resources in low-income and marginalized residents.  How this happens is up to community, so we are inviting everyone to share your ideas or questions with us at this link.  Please follow our facebook page, visit our website, and subscribe to receive notifications and newsletters.

By 2050, Athens could see more than 50 days above 90 degrees every year!

By 2050, an average of 55 days above 90 degrees

Historically, Athens has seen an average of 11 days above 90 degrees each year.  But due to global climate change caused by fossil fuel pollution, the next few decades will bring more and more dangerously hot days to Athens (read more here).  Extreme heat can cause immediate illnesses or exacerbate existing health problems, according to the World Health Organization.

Communities that are prepared to shelter vulnerable populations during extreme heat events fare better.  Installing renewable energy in community centers and in low-income neighborhoods can make Athens better equipped to provide cool shelter for residents during extreme heat.  AND, we'll be doing our part to reduce the air pollution that is causing temperatures to rise.  As more communities join Athens in pledging to transition to clean and renewable energy sources, the worst effects of climate change can be avoided.

49 kW of solar installed on ACC Property

Already at Work

As part of the Solarize Athens 2020 program, ACCGov installed 49 kW of Solar at Firestation 2 and the Cooperative Extension building.  This brings the total ACC solar energy capacity to 794 kW. Combined with energy from landfill gas and ground-source heat pumps, ACCGov produces or offsets about 15.2% of its energy using alternative sources and avoids 4,858 tons of CO2 pollution every year.  This also saves ACCGov money, which frees up funds for other important local uses that benefit residents.

Mariah Parker speaks at Rise for Climate, September 2018

Why I Believe in 100%

Commissioner Mariah Parker

Though we're a tiny swath of Georgia, we’re interconnected with people and ecosystems across the world, and securing the future of our planet through bold environmental policy and requisite action is, in a global sense, what a good neighbor does. As well, I understand the disproportionate impact that climate disaster and environmental injustice have on communities of color and low income communities like those I represent, and I want to do what’s right for my immediate neighbors and their kids and grandkids, too. That’s why it’s so important to me that 100% Athens become a reality, and in a way that centers the communities most affected.
