ACC Leisure Services to Delay Summer Camp and Pool Openings

After careful consideration, the Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services Department plans to open pools and splash pads the weekend of July 4, 2020 and hopes to begin all summer camps the week of July 6th. These dates have been identified with anticipation that Covid-19 conditions improve and will provide time to train our seasonal staff and prepare for summer activities. The health and safety of the Athens area community, including our campers and staff, is our utmost priority.

“We understand how disappointing this delay in our summer camps and pools is for our community,” says Kent Kilpatrick, Director of the Leisure Services Department.  “We feel it is in the best interest of public health of the Athens-Clarke County community to make sure that we are prepared for the thousands of children who spend their summer with us. Our team will spend the month of June working to finalize preparations and be ready for a strong start in July.”

All individuals who are currently registered for summer camp or swim lessons in June will be given the option to register for any available July camp or swim session, or receive a full refund.

The anticipated updated dates for aquatics facilities to be open are July 4 – August 2, 2020.  After pools close, Trail Creek Splash Pad will continue to be open on the weekends through Labor Day on Monday, September 7, 2020.

COVID-19 and the Parks - What You Need to Know:

In response to the current health concerns and safety at this time, all Leisure Services Department sponsored classes, events, programs, and rentals are suspended through May.

The Firefly and Greenway trails are open for public use to provide recreational opportunities for the community to experience the outdoors while traveling along our multi-use paths.

This decision was made to provide recreational opportunities along the Firefly and Greenway trails while other parks and facilities remain closed. The public is reminded to remain active and moving while visiting these trails, refrain from gathering in groups, and practice social distancing.

All other facilities, parks, and trails remained closed until further notice. All outdoor basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts are locked.

The Leisure Services Department is working with Athens-Clarke County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and reviewing information from the CDC and Public Health to monitor the Coronavirus (COVID-19). The safety and health of the public and our staff is always our highest priority.

We encourage all citizens to remain informed by visiting www.accgov.com/coronavirus.
