Ongoing Road Closures Due to Damage from Flooding & Heavy Rains

Flood Damage NewsFlash Image

Several Athens-Clarke County roads will be closed indefinitely as crews work to design and replace failed stormwater pipes and culverts under the roads. The roads include:

  • Olympic Drive - from Indian Hills Road to Athena Drive (local traffic allowed from Indian Hills Road to Hancock Industrial Way)
  • Charlie Bolton Road - from Smithonia Road to Lem Edwards Road
  • Voyles Road - from Spring Valley Road to Olympic Drive

Detours for all of the roads are currently in place.

On Wednesday, January 4, sections of Olympic Drive and Charlie Bolton Road collapsed due to failing stormwater pipes and culverts underneath the pavement. The section of Voyles Road subsequently failed on Saturday, January 7. The structures were all damaged as a result of the heavy rains and flooding that started on the evening of Tuesday, January 3. Each of the roads have been closed since their failures were discovered.

The Athens-Clarke County Transportation and Public Works Department is currently operating under emergency procedures to design the stormwater replacements and select contractors to replace the infrastructure and repair the road surfaces.

There is currently no timeline for the completion of the repairs, but they are expected to take at least several months. Updates will be added as they are known.
