Tax Commissioner Alerting Residents to Mailing Asking for Payment for a Property Assessment Profile

Mailing Alert

Tax Commissioner Toni Meadow is alerting residents to a mailing sent from a California address to property owners in Athens-Clarke County that encourages owners to pay a $98 service fee in order to obtain a copy of their "property assessment profile." The mailing, which states that it is a Recorded Deed Notice, offers to provide a comprehensive property report and a current grant deed or other record of title for a fee.

"Several residents have brought this mailing to my attention and asked about its validity," says Meadow. "The bottom line is that information about property ownership is often publicly available for little or no cost through resources from the Tax Commissioner's Office, the Clerk of Superior and State Court, and the Tax Assessor's Office. We want to make sure that residents check with us first before spending money with an unknown entity on an unnecessary report containing information that they could easily obtain themselves."

An example of the mailing is available with identifying information removed is available as a PDF document for residents to view.

For more information, contact the Tax Commissioner's Office at 706-613-3120.
