The 2021 property tax statements have been mailed. Taxes are due on October 20, 2021. The Tax Commissioner’s Office can be contacted at 706-613-3120 and is located in the Athens-Clarke County Courthouse at 325 East Washington Street, Room 250. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Individuals or business owners can also drop off payments in a secure drop box outside of the Tag Office at 3025 Lexington Road. No postage is necessary, but payments should have “property tax” written on the outside of the envelope. The Tax Commissioner's Office only accepts checks, cashier’s checks, or money orders at the drop box. Cash is not accepted. Payments for property taxes can only be dropped off and cannot be processed at the Tag Office, so individuals should not wait in line.
Individuals or business owners who receive a tax bill for property they no longer own should also contact the Tax Commissioner’s office for instructions on how to protect themselves from appearing delinquent. Staff can provide instructions on how to have liability removed from the record as provided by law.
