Athens CARES Funding of $6.6 Million

Coronavirus COVID-19 Update - Mayor & Commission

At a Special Called Session on August 11, 2020, the Athens-Clarke County Mayor and Commission approved a resolution to authorize the execution of the Coronavirus Relief Fund terms and conditions agreement and a Commission-Defined Option for disbursement of funds for a variety of community services through December 30, 2020.

The reimbursement funds come from the United States government, which has made available grant funding through the Coronavirus Relief Fund (CRF) to the State of Georgia. The state was authorized to share CRF allocations and disbursements in a phased, measure approach with local governments across Georgia. The Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget (OPB) coordinates with local governments to achieve allocation and disbursement of such CRF funding.

The initial Phase 1 amount of funding available to Athens-Clarke County is $6.6 million dollars.

The approved measure provides the following directions:

Athens CARES - Phase 1 - $6,643,602
Before September 01
1) Adopt CARES Resolution
2) Direct staff to seek reimbursement for Phase 1 amount of $6,643,602 for eligible expenses.

3) Authorize staff to immediately transfer $5,293,860 from fund balance for the purposes and organizations in Attachment 1 to be used by December 30.
