UPDATE UPDATE: October 5th Officer Involved Shooting Body Cam Video Released
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department has released the body camera footage from the Officer Involved Shooting on October 5th. The incident took place at 190 Baxter Drive. In the video, the subject identified as Salvador Salazar, swings a large knife or machete at our officer, resulting in our officer firing his weapon. October 9, 2019 UPDATE – Officer Involved Shooting – 190 Baxter Drive
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has released an update on the October 5th ACCPD Officer-Involved Shooting. (see link below)
The ACCPD officer involved in the incident is Roger Williams. Williams was not injured in the incident and is on administrative leave with pay in accordance with department policy.
Also in accordance with our standing policy, the ACCPD contacted the GBI who agreed to handle the investigation.
ACCPD reminds the public that victims who are experiencing or have experienced domestic violence or abuse should call Project Safe at 706-543-3331, a local agency that works to end domestic violence through crisis intervention, prevention, and education in the community. www.project-safe.org

Information that we know at this time indicates the following:
Shortly after 5:00 pm, ACCPD responded to a domestic violence call at 190 Baxter Drive. Upon arrival, our officer encountered a 28-year-old male who was involved in a domestic violence incident.
Shortly after the initial encounter, the male subject brandished a knife in a threatening manner towards our officer. Fearing for his life, our officer discharged his service weapon and struck the male in the torso.
ACCPD provided first aid to the subject until EMS arrived to transport him to a local hospital. Currently, the subject is in serious condition. His identity and that of our officer is not being released at this time.
The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave with pay in accordance with department policy.
Also in accordance with our standing policy, the ACCPD has contacted the Georgia
Bureau of Investigation who have agreed to handle the investigation.
