On November 7, 2017, Athens-Clarke County citizens approved the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST) 2018 Program Referendum, which included the Firefly Trail Project (Project #06). This project includes a pedestrian and bicycle bridge over Trail Creek, now referred to as the Firefly Bridge over Trail Creek.
The trail connection and creek crossing will be designed for an area within Dudley Park, where a remnant of an old wooden railroad trestle remains along the abandoned railroad corridor. The structure is commonly referred to as the Trail Creek Trestle or the Murmur Trestle.
The Firefly Bridge over Trail Creek project will include a structural evaluation of the railroad trestle to investigate its viability as part of the trail system. Based on the findings of the structural assessment, the Firefly Bridge over Trail Creek design team will produce several alternative options for a future Firefly Trail connection and crossing of Trail Creek. These options will be developed within a community engagement process that will include listening sessions, public meetings, online surveys, and a public open house.
The first opportunity to provide input into the Firefly Bridge over Trail Creek is to join the design team and share your thoughts at an upcoming listening session. Three listening sessions will be held between March 26-30:
- Tuesday morning, March 26, 10:00 a.m. to noon in the Community Room at the Lyndon House Arts Center (211 Hoyt Street)
- Tuesday evening, March 26, 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the Athens-Clarke County Planning Department Auditorium (120 W. Dougherty Street)
- Saturday morning, March 30. 10:00 a.m. to noon in the Athens-Clarke County Planning Department Auditorium (120 W. Dougherty Street)
