Move-Out Guide
Start planning NOW for what to do with your stuff!
Every year, tons of unnecessary waste end up in our landfill. Avoid being overwhelmed and stressed out by making a plan now!
Moving out can be a stressful, tiresome and hectic task. With so many things to consider, you may forget about how much work getting rid of your stuff can be! Follow along with this guide to help you be sure every last item you own is properly dealt with by move-out day.
First, what do you REALLY have? Think about... everything:
Bedroom |
| Bathroom |
| Kitchen |
|
Living Room |
| Household Hazardous Waste |
| School Supplies |
|
Second, do you want to keep it? If not…
Can it be donated?
Athens Area Habitat for Humanity compiled a list of items and where they can be donated or recycled. CLICK HERE for the list.
- Unopened food can be donated to:
- Little Free Pantry (and personal care items)
- UGA Student Food Pantry
- Athens Community Fridge
- Zero Waste Athens GA
- UGA Swap Shop
- JunkSouth
If damaged, can it be repaired or fixed?
- YouTube is a great resource for DIY fixes.
- Need a professional? Often repair is cheaper than buying something new. Just use Google to find local repair.
Can it be recycled at CHaRM?
- Electronics, stretch plastic, Styrofoam, light bulbs, chemicals, anything with a plug and so much more can go to CHaRM. Check out what all we accept here: accgov.com/charm
Can you sell it?
- eBay
- Facebook Marketplace
- UGA Exchange
Could you re-home it with a friend?
- Post it on your social media channels to see if anyone is interested.
- Check out FreeCycle for an online grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (and getting) stuff for free in their own towns and keeping good stuff out of landfills.
No other options? Take it to the landfill.
- 5700 Lexington Rd., Winterville, GA 30683
- 706-613-3508
- Monday - Friday: 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM and Saturday: 7:30 AM - 3:00 PM
Last, DO NOT dump and run!
Make a plan. Every year, an enormous amount of abandoned property is left strewn about apartment complexes. Not only is this illegal, but it forces others - like our ACC Solid Waste employees - to take care of a mess that isn't theirs. Please look into these resources for getting rid of your stuff before you move out. There are many inexpensive options for safe and sustainable waste disposal, the CHaRM being one. Typically, the average CHaRM loads costs $5 or less, if not free!
How are you going to move it? Are you renting a moving truck or just going to try and fit it all in your car? Make sure your stuff is going to fit. Is it heavy? Will you need help moving?
Secure your load. The Loop is often littered with pillows, clothes and even furniture that falls off the back of trucks and trailers. If cost is a concern, do some research and plan ahead.
Remember, it’s REDUCE first, REUSE second, and RECYCLE third. Waste reduction starts with buying/consuming less, and it’s much more fun to make flower lanterns out of hard-to-recycle woven plastic than simply throwing it out. With your help, we can divert tons from the landfill. Just donate, sell, repair or recycle as much as you can!
