As you know, the Arts Center is closed until further notice. However, we have an incredible Juried Show to share. We are moving the 45th online. Each day (see menu to the left) in the morning hours we will post a new work on display in the galleries with a short story.
Hi! I’m Broderick Flanigan @flanigans_portrait_studio This work, “Black boy Joy” (oil on canvas), was inspired by my childhood experience as well as my own experience as a father and the importance of parents, especially fathers in children’s lives. Many black fathers are present and doing the best they can given the situations they are faced with. This second piece, “Pride and Joy” (oil on canvas) was inspired by my appreciation for motherhood, especially Black Motherhood. Here my nephew, Jamar Harrison Jr, places a crown on his mother’s, Wachovia Flanigan’s, head. My favorite thing about Athens is the intelligence and resilience of the Black community to survive in spite of limited resources, while creating cultural space and presence along the way.
