At Home

While Athens-Clarke County is working hard to use energy responsibly, residents can help by reducing their energy consumption in their homes.

The average family in America uses 10,766 kWh of energy per year. Most energy consumption comes from space heating and cooling (over 40%, according to US Energy Information Administration energy use reports), but energy use applies to everything from heating water in sinks and faucets to plugging in home computers and devices.

Electrical energy is provided by the burning of fossil fuels or by other renewable energy alternatives. The burning of fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide emissions, which are released into the air as greenhouse gases. To reduce your home's carbon dioxide production (or, your carbon footprint), you can make small changes to reduce energy use or use energy more efficiently.

Tips for Home Energy Conservation

Making small changes can make a big environmental impact. Explore tips below to reduce energy consumption in your home:
  • Turn off lights when you leave the room
  • Unplug appliances when not in use
  • When purchasing new appliances, look for Energy Star products
  • Seal and insulate doors and windows to reduce heating and cooling costs
  • Use windows and fans instead of air conditioning systems when possible
  • Replace traditional light bulbs with LED light bulbs
  • Heating water takes energy; take shorter showers and wash laundry on the cold setting when possible
  • Consider electricity-free entertainment alternatives like books or outdoor activities
