Since November 2020, Emily Cameron has been sharing portraits of local residents on her website The Local Athenian. Through interviews and photographs, Emily reveals insights into the lives of community members that reach far beyond the surface. As a photographer, Emily is documenting the people and the place. As an activist, Emily is celebrating an inclusive community and connecting disparate lives. At a time when so many of us have felt isolated and separated, an opportunity to see so many faces connected in one setting has new value.
In her exhibition proposal, Emily Cameron wrote “Athens, Georgia is a wonderful community. The people that reside within this town deserve to be celebrated and feel connected to one another. The Local Athenian aims to seek out and bring to light some of the most eclectic and special folks that exist here in Athens, Georgia. Out of all the places on earth, they have committed their lives to this place, to make it home, and to be a part of an ever-evolving community that the Classic City has to offer.”
Emily Cameron is an eight-year resident of Athens and a lover of people and stories. She created The Local Athenian with the desire to dig deep into the roots that allow this community to flourish. The conversations and stories she shares expand readers’ understanding of and appreciation for the town. Emily says “this is my way of giving back to a community that has always provided an avenue for creative expression in whomever seeks it.”
