Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A)

Overview

Athens-Clarke County is proud to partner with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program to reduce roadway fatalities and serious injuries. The program focuses on making streets safer for everyone – people walking and biking, people in cars, transit riders, children, older adults, and individuals with mobility challenges.

Updates

Since the study began in August 2024, the project team has analyzed data, held pop-up outreach events, deployed an online survey, led numerous focus group meetings, and engaged in other transportation planning activities to better understand roadway safety issues faced by Athens residents.

Between December 2024 and February 2025, eleven focus group meetings were held to gather input from ACCGov staff and representatives from the Clarke County School District, local businesses, non-profits, government boards and commissions, the University of Georgia, the Georgia Department of Transportation, and the Northeast Georgia Regional Commission. An example focus group presentation is available here.

Information Shared at Our Summer 2025 Outreach Events

We were out in the ACC community in June and held pop-up events at the Juneteenth Music and Arts Festival on June 19th as well as at the Transit Multimodal Center on June 24th. Here is a sample of the information presented and discussed with community members at these events.

Roadway Safety Countermeasures - Share Your Experience

We presented a diverse toolkit of possible roadway safety measures designed to address roadway safety for all users across various road types. We asked community members to answer these questions:

  • What safety improvements would make you more comfortable driving, walking, biking, or riding transit in your community?
  • Are there specific safety solutions you'd like to see, or ones you have concerns about?

High Injury Network - Share Your Safety Concerns

The project team has identified the most dangerous roads and intersections across Athens-Clarke County on a high injury network. We asked community members to tell us about their experiences on the high injury network. This is a continued effort to help us identify projects that will be included in the Safety Action Plan.

Project Prioritization Criteria - Convey What Matters Most

We want to prioritize safety projects that align with community goals. We asked community members what factors (and their ranking of importance) should be considered to prioritize projects?
